New from Volvo — Upgraded Hybrid Powertrains

Volvo Cars recently released upgraded and newly-developed electrified powertrain options. Going forward, these new powertrains will be made available across Volvo’s entire model lineup. These upgrades and developments are in step with Volvo Cars’ goal to electrify its entire vehicle portfolio by the middle of next decade, and they also satisfy a growing consumer demand for all-electric vehicles.

The Volvo B Badge
To make these upgrades possible, Volvo amped up its production capacity so now 25% of its total production can be Twin Engine plug-in hybrid cars. These new powertrains fall under Volvo’s “B”  badge variant and join the existing T8 and T6 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrains. With such sought-after upgrades and developments, Volvo anticipates its new “B” badged powertrains to become the new standard across their model lineup.

Mild Hybrids
Additionally, Volvo Cars introduced new mild hybrids, which will be made available in the coming months. These vehicles include diesel and gas versions of the XC90 and XC60 SUVs. To produce these new integrated electrified powertrains, Volvo paired their existing internal combustion engines with Volvo’s advanced kinetic energy recovery braking system.

What it means for drivers
Drivers will enjoy up to 15% fuel savings and emission reductions thanks to these new powertrains that are electrified by brake-by-wire energy recovery, which recovers kinetic energy while braking.

Which model gets what
The upgraded T8 Twin engine plug-in hybrid powertrain with the new battery and brake-by wire-technology will be available on all 90 and 60 Series cars.

The smaller capacity T6 Twin engine plug-in hybrid powertrain with the new battery and brake-by wire-technology will be available on the V60 wagon and S60 sedan.

A B5-badged mild hybrid gas or diesel variant and a B6-badged mild hybrid gas variant will be available on the XC90.

Drivers of the XC60 may choose between three options: a B5-badged mild hybrid gas or diesel variant, a B4-badged mild hybrid diesel variant, and a B6-badged mild hybrid gas variant. Furthermore, XC60 drivers who select the B5-badged mild hybrid gas variant may choose between front wheel or all-wheel drive.

And, the electrified option on the smaller sized XC40 is a T5 Twin Engine gas-plug-in hybrid. A T4 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid option will also be made available on the XC40 at a later date.
