Furthering its commitment to sustainability, Volvo announced the new all-electric 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge, a stylish, four-door compact crossover modeled after the popular Volvo XC40 Recharge. However, the new C40 Recharge is shorter, smaller and greener. There is zero leather material used, and the new C40 is designed as an EV only - there will be no gas or hybrid equivalent. Another big difference? The 2022 Volvo C40 will only be sold online. Volvo plans to move more of its sales to an online platform, the C40 Recharge is the first to be offered this way.
The 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge is built upon the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge with a similar interior, engine and style. While the C40 is three inches shorter overall, the front row actually has more headroom with the standard panoramic sunroof than the XC40. Volvo designates its SUVs with the ‘XC’ label, so the Volvo C40 is designated as a Coupe. Yet, it has four doors and is decidedly not a coupe. However, it is smaller, sleeker and more compact, making the C40 Recharge the ‘Coupe’ version of the XC40 Recharge. Essentially, the Volvo C40 Recharge is a sports car in a crossover SUV body.
While the cabin is nearly identical to the XC40 Recharge, the new C40 Recharge is 100% leather-free and features Android Automotive tech. Android Automotive differs from Android Auto™ in that it requires no smartphone to connect, utilizes all of Google - Google Maps, Google Assistant, YouTube Music, etc. - and offers over-the-air updates and an unlimited data plan.
Outside, the 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge features new LED headlights with pixel tech, smartly designed rear LED taillights, new fog-light housings, a closed off front grille, new wheel designs and new sculpting in the lower body.
The new Volvo C40 Recharge is built on the same powertrain as the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge, so we expect the same, or perhaps better, range and charging times. Like in the XC40 Recharge, the C40 Recharge has 402 horsepower and 482 lb-ft of torque with a 78-kWh battery pack and an electric motor at each axle. The C40 is clocked in a 4.7 seconds to go from 0 - 60mph with a top speed of 112 mph. Currently, the 2022 C40 Recharge is not EPA rated for electric range, but we expect it to be about 208 miles like the XC40 Recharge, or even longer.
In another first for Volvo, the 2022 C40 Recharge will only be available to purchase online, not through a dealership. Dealers will still deliver the cars and provide service - visit Volvo Walnut Creek for expert Volvo Service. New orders will come with some perks: roadside assistance, home charging tech, service and warranty and even insurance (depending on state laws).
So far, Volvo is on track to reach its goal of producing only EVs by 2030 and introducing one new EV every year by 2025. Up next? The next-gen, all-electric Volvo XC90. By 2025, Volvo plans to be half EV and half hybrid, with no more gas-only vehicles to be produced.
For now, you can pre-order the 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge at Volvo with a $500 refundable deposit. No timeline for delivery has been released, but the new C40 Recharge will be produced at Volvo’s Belgium plant.
