Volvo’s commitment to safety and sustainability takes another huge step forward with the all-new, all-electric EX30 SUV. It demonstrates not only a vehicle that is environmentally conscious, but a production cycle that will have a significantly smaller carbon footprint than any of its predecessors. At Volvo Cars Walnut Creek we applaud this achievement.

The Volvo EX30 has reduced its total carbon footprint over 200,000 kms to below 30 tons. This represents an astounding 25% reduction compared to the already small footprint on the Volvo C40 and XC40 models. This furthers Volvo Cars plans to slash CO2 emissions by 40% between 2018 and 2025.

“Our new EX30 is a big step in the right direction for our sustainability ambitions,” said Anders Kärrberg, our global head of sustainability. “By 2025, we aim to reduce our overall CO2 emissions per car by 40 percent from 2018 levels through a 50 percent reduction in overall tailpipe emissions, and a 25 percent reduction in emissions from our operations, raw material sourcing and supply chain – all on the way towards our ambition of being a climate neutral company by 2040.”

Designing the Volvo EX30 to be an all-electric vehicle was an easy decision. But achieving Volvo’s ambitious C02 reductions required dedication and intelligent engineering.

Aluminum and steel are two of the biggest contributors to production-related CO2 emissions, so this was the first challenge. The Volvo EX30 uses less aluminum and steel. It also takes advantage of recycled materials. About 25% of the aluminum and 17 percent of the steel is from reclaimed sources without compromising the safety for which Volvo is famous.

Inside the Volvo EX30 SUV is a marvel. With optimization as a guiding sustainable design principle, the Volvo designers have combined multiple functions inside the Volvo EX30 within one component. This reduces the number of parts needed inside while still maintaining Volvo’s high standards of functionality.

Volvo also used a wide array of recycled and renewable materials for seats, dashboard and doors, including materials such as denim, flax, and a wool-blend that also contains around 70 percent recycled polyester. The result is an eco-friendly interior that never compromises on the luxury one expects from a Volvo.

The production process for the Volvo EX30 has also been streamlined in multiple ways including finding supply chain partners who share Volvo’s commitment to the environment.

At Volvo Cars Walnut Creek, we look forward to the EX30 joining our lineup of Recharge Electric and Plug-in Hybrid models like the XC90, XC60, C40, and the anticipated EX90. If you are in Berkeley, Pittsburg, Antioch, or anywhere nearby, you’re invited to visit Volvo Cars Walnut Creek.
