70-years-of-volvo.jpgIt’s hard to believe that Volvo first arrived in America 70 years ago. While founded in Sweden in 1927, Volvo didn’t come to the United States until 1955. Drivers throughout the U.S. were introduced to Scandinavian design, innovative engineering, and dedication to safety. As we celebrate this anniversary, we’d like to reflect on the Volvo legacy and how history is continuing to be written by a true pioneer in the automotive world.

The Volvo story begins with the PV444, a compact, robust car that quickly gained a reputation for reliability, comfort, and advanced safety design. The latter would become a hallmark of Volvo who would build reputation for being a leader in safety. One of Volvo’s most famous innovations is the three-point safety belt which made its debut in 1959. A version of this appears in all modern vehicles. Volvo could have profited off the patent for this but chose to waive the rights so that other auto manufacturers could include it in their vehicles. It is an early example of Volvo’s philosophy of putting people before profits. This ethos continues and is seen in every vehicle in stock at Volvo Cars Walnut Creek.

Volvo cars grew in popularity over the years developing a loyal fan base dedicated to the brand. Understated, modern aesthetics and smart engineering we’re big selling points but it was Volvo’s commitment to safety that people embraced. Soon Volvo cars were seen everywhere, from daily school carpools to long cross-country adventures. One of the most iconic, early models was the Volvo 240 series. Introduced in the mid-1970s, this model was a favorite, primarily because of its reliability. The 240 series has become a true Volvo classic.

In the present day, while much as changed, the heart of Volvo’s philosophy has not. The company still strives to take elevate safety and make the driving experience even better. These values can be seen in today’s Volvo models like the popular XC90 and S90, all-electric EVs like the C40 and XC40 Recharge, and the next generation of Volvo vehicles, the EX30 and EX90. All feature simple, luxurious Scandinavian design while being replete with the latest Volvo technological advancements like collision mitigation, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control.

Volvo’s commitment to people doesn’t end with their vehicles. Through their dedication to mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric vehicles, Volvo is helping people reduce their carbon footprint. Volvo’s devotion to the environment has led them to create new means of production as well as using sustainable materials.

At Volvo Cars Walnut Creek, we are proud to be a part of the Volvo family and hope to bring the Volvo experience and safety to drivers throughout Berkeley, Oakland, and right here in Walnut Creek. We invite you to join us for the 70th Anniversary of Volvo in the United States.
