The 2020 Volvo XC90 has been awarded the highest honor for safety, the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus, putting it in the upper echelon of safe vehicles. Volvo has always been known for safety and is usually leading the pack in innovation and safety features, so it should come as no surprise that the new SUV from Volvo stays true to the brand’s legacy.
To receive the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus, vehicles must pass a battery of crash tests, and it must pass them perfectly. They involve more than what the federal government requires of a five-star rating, which tests the chassis. The new Volvo XC90 got perfect scores in every IIHS subcategory. Along with the Volvo XC60 (which received the Top Safety Pick award), the Volvo XC90 received the top score of Good in crash tests involving small and moderate overlaps, roof-strength evaluations and side impacts. They were also tested on vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention, vehicle-to-vehicle forward crash protection and evaluated on the car’s built-in safety and driver-assist systems. They passed with flying colors.
The Volvo XC90 also passed the headlight test, which is where many vehicles fail. Both the Volvo XC90 and XC60 have two headlight variations, with whether the LED beams are curve-adaptive being where the winners and the losers differ. The XC90 was deemed Acceptable, whereas the XC60 was Marginal, thus giving it the Top Safety Pick and the XC90 the Top Safety Pick Plus.
