Volvo is committed to a more sustainable automotive future. With goals to reach carbon neutrality and become a fully circular business, new Volvo vehicles are becoming more electrified and environmentally friendly. The 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric was the first Volvo SUV to run on zero emissions. The release of the all-new, all-electric 2022 Volvo C40 marks the start of Volvo’s transition to producing only fully electric cars by 2030.
Sustainable at Every Turn
Volvo believes that every part of the production process should become more sustainable and is working with suppliers to use 100% renewable energy during production and use more recycled, bio-based materials that can easily be reused or put back into the earth. The new Volvo C40 has a leather-free interior and fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles. But that is just the beginning. Volvo aims to be entirely leather-free across its entire lineup by 2030.
Volvo Cars has an ambitious climate action plan over the next 20 years with the end goal to have a fully circular business by 2040. A circular economy is one where a product starts with recycled materials, then is used, reused or repurposed, and eventually recycled again for as long as possible. In our typical linear economy, new materials are used to make a product, used once and then thrown away. Volvo aims to create new Volvo cars and Volvo parts that last a lifetime with more recycled materials, bio-based textiles that can be composted or can be repurposed in order to keep them away from the junkyard.
Volvo Cars Climate Action Plan
2021 - First all-electric Volvo, the 2022 Volvo C40, is completely leather-free
Torslanda becomes 2nd Volvo production plant to run on climate neutral energy
2025 - New Volvo cars to consist of 25% recycled and bio-based materials
Use 30% less energy per car produced in the Volvo manufacturing network
All immediate suppliers to use 100% renewable energy
2030 - Offer only fully electric, leather-free Volvos
2040 - Become a fully circular business

To become fully sustainable, Volvo aims to address all areas of production, not just carbon emissions from vehicles driving and using gas. Every part of each new Volvo vehicle must get considered: where the material came from, how it was produced and how it will be handled when it is no longer in use. This includes respect for animal welfare and considering the environmental impacts of production. In its goal to go leather-free, Volvo recognizes the concern over cattle farming, methane emissions and deforestation.
Nordico is a new interior material created by Volvo Cars consisting of recycled materials such as plastic bottles, recycled corks from the wine industry and bio-based materials from regional forests in Sweden and Finland that are harvested and manufactured sustainably. While not vegan, Volvo uses wool from suppliers that source their materials responsibly and ethically.
Robin Page, head of design at Volvo Cars, states, “The next challenge is to change what we do with these materials, whether that’s making car parts that last forever, re-enter the circular economy or go back into the earth.”
Volvo’s sustainability plan goes beyond tailpipe emissions. Though full electrification is a significant necessity, to be fully sustainable, Volvo must also address carbon emissions during the entire production process, including the supply chain. Recycling and reusing materials to join the circular economy must also play a part in order to avoid filling landfills and creating waste. Of course, Volvo plans to do all this while still creating beautiful, high-performance and safe vehicles using advanced technology.
