Volvo celebrates 20 years of All-Wheel Drive in the snow

Volvo AWD

February 1, 2017 - Volvo is celebrating 20 years of mechanical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) by putting some of its most capable cars through their paces on the frozen lakes around the Northern Swedish ski resort of Are. The Swedish car maker is running a winter test drive showcasing its leading mechanical and new electric All-Wheel Drive solutions with the XC90 and V90 Cross Country models.

"Volvo cars are well known for what we call 'framkomlighet' in Swedish - the ability to get you wherever you want to go - regardless of the weather conditions. This is an important part of our heritage and a clear reflection of who we are and where we come from. With the recent addition of electric All-Wheel Drive we have further refined our performance in this important area," said Henrik Green, Senior VP, Research & Development at Volvo Cars.

Advances in AWD technology mean that improved handling, stability and traction continue to provide a confident, agile and enjoyable driving experience while reducing fuel consumption.

"Electrification will bring ever more flexibility to AWD. You can see the first signs of this in our XC90 T8 Twin Engine, where we have an electric rear-axle drive unit powering the rear wheels. As we move to full battery electric vehicles and other powertrain applications, we will see increased opportunities to control each motor and wheel independently, based on either the surface conditions or the desired driving style," said Henrik Green.

As AWD technology has advanced, the weight of mechanical systems has come down and efficiency has improved. Since the introduction of efficient 'Active On Demand' technology, every wheel is always engaged to allow for the instant distribution of torque to the where it is needed. The actual torque applied is controlled to constantly deliver the right properties regarding handling, stability and traction.

"We understand the needs of our customers. We understand the need for a flexible AWD solution that quickly and automatically adapts to different real-world, all-weather circumstances. AWD is as much a safety feature as it is a vehicle dynamics system and we are committed to delivering a confident, balanced and enjoyable driving experience that delivers a feeling of full control," added Henrik Green.

All-Wheel Drive variants account for over 50 per cent of new 90 Series car orders for the Swedish carmaker. Across the full range of Volvo car models, the figure is over 40 per cent.

The V90 arrives in America

Volvo V90

January 5, 2017 - The V90 is coming to the United States in 2017 building on over 60 years of wagon heritage that started with the Volvo Duett. The V90 will make its North American debut at the Detroit Auto Show January 8-22, 2017. The V90 will be available as a Model Year 2018 later this year.

"Wagons are an important part of Volvo's history. After successfully launching the XC90 SUV, S90 sedan and most recently V90 Cross Country, we complete our 90 range with the introduction of our new luxury wagon" said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Cars USA.

The V90 has received international praise for its combination of style and utility. Based on the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) and new Volvo design language, the V90 will share interior design attributes with the award-winning XC90, such as the 12" touch screen, open-pore wood trim and Nappa leather. V90 drivers can expect the feeling of relaxed confidence and sedan-like driving dynamics with the storage capability of a crossover.

The V90 will be available with T5 FWD and T6 AWD powertrains in either Inscription or R-Design trim. To provide a full range of options and personalization, the V90 will be sold exclusively as custom order vehicles starting soon via Volvo Overseas Delivery or Concierge. Both options offer unique buying experiences.

The first U.S. specification V90 wagons will be delivered to customers this summer. Volvo Overseas Delivery pricing and trim details for the V90 will be announced next month and posted here.

Swedish police first to use the V90 as a police car...

Volvo Police Car

December 1, 2016 - Swedish police will receive their first V90 police cars early next year after the car recently achieved the highest rating ever in the highly demanding police driving test for the Scandinavian country.

The demands on emergency vehicles are higher than on normal road cars. On top of that, in Sweden the police car is judged as a workplace. This means any car has to meet very strict demands in areas such as performance, comfort, quality and ergonomics in order to qualify as a police car.

The Swedish police car test focuses on five areas: a braking, an obstacle course, evasive action, and high-speed emergency driving.

The overall score for the V90 was 9.2 out of 10, the highest rating ever achieved by any car in this demanding test.

The final test protocol on the V90 by Swedish police test drivers concludes that "overall, it is difficult to find faults. Chassis, steering, suspension, traction control and powertrain all show exemplary performance. Quick lane changes at high speeds feel deceptively easy, the car does what it is told to do and shakes off lateral forces without any protest."

Besides Sweden, police in Norway, Italy, the UK and the Netherlands have also used Volvo cars in recent years. The V90 will be made available to police forces around the globe.

With the V90 police car, Volvo takes the highly refined driving experience of the award-winning standard V90 to the next level. To transform the V90 into a suitable emergency vehicle, the Volvo Car Special Products department enhanced the car to meet the specific demands of law enforcement.

For instance, the chassis is made stronger and more dynamic, the brakes and suspension are improved and the car is fully equipped with all necessary tools and communication equipment. It takes about a week to transform a standard V90 into a police car at the special facility in Torslanda, Sweden.

Volvo has a long history with police cars. In 1929 Swedish police fought crime from behind the wheel of a Volvo. In the decades that followed, classic Volvos such as the Amazon and the 144 also served as police units. More recently, the XC70 and V70 wagons have been used by police forces.

U.S. specification V90 wagons will be available for order via Overseas Delivery in 2017. To be notified when you can submit an order to receive your new V90 wagon at the factory in Sweden send an email today. (Your V90, of course would be without a multi color exterior and flashing blue lights...)
