At Volvo Cars Walnut Creek, we’ve long been admirers of the safety innovations pioneered by Volvo. We’re especially excited to see how Volvo is utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to take safety to the next level as part of their Safe Space Technology program.

Prevention is the Best Means of Protection

Volvo cars, SUVs, and Wagons have earned their reputation for safety by protecting drivers and passengers in the advent of an accident. Now Volvo is taking the next step – preventing accidents altogether. Volvo Cars has set their goal at zero collisions and seeks to accomplish this by combining the latest intelligent technologies with traditional, proven safety measures,

Keeping an Eye on Safety

The first step to achieving zero collision is by spotting potential hazards. That’s where LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) comes in. By combining an extremely accurate detection system (more accurate than those using cameras or radar) with an AI-driven super-computer, the next generation of Volvo vehicles will be able to sense and avoid potential road dangers. LiDAR can “see” pedestrians up to 250 meters away even at highway speeds and will be standard on the new Volvo EX90.

You’ve Got a Safety Co-Pilot

It’s easy to succumb to fatigue, distractions, and human failings that keep us from driving our best. For those events, Volvo has created the Driver Understanding System which acts like a co-pilot that can assist if you are sleepy or distracted. This system takes appropriate countermeasures like reducing speeds, braking, and even coming to a complete stop should the need arise.

The Future is Safe

Safe Space Technology will be standard in the all-new Volvo EX90 but has already appeared in Volvo’s current selection of mild hybrid vehicles like the XC90 and XC60 and electric vehicles (EVs) like the XC90 Recharge, XC40 Recharge, and C40 Recharge. The future of safety extends to our fleet of Certified by Volvo Pre-Owned cars and SUVs which will also benefit from these technological advances.

See What the Future of Safety Looks Like

We are excited about the impending arrival of the new EX90 and EX30 and how they will revolutionize automotive safety. If you’d like to see how these innovations are being used in the Volvos of today, just stop in and see for yourself. If you’re in Berkeley, Concord, or Pittsburg we’re nearby and we welcome you to visit us at Volvo Cars Walnut Creek.
